Our First Outreach Workshop

AACTION held its first Outreach Workshop on Sunday, June 19th, 2006. Over 20 volunteers joined together to create materials which will be shipped to Dr. Yinka Akindayomi (See AACTION Story), the Service Director of the Children’s Developmental Centre in Lagos Nigeria. Dr. Yinka is one of the few people in the country of Nigeria working to provide services to individuals with autism. AACTION has been in close contact with Yinka and when she expressed a need for classroom materials for her school we saw a great opportunity to help her. The volunteers cut, glued, laminated and velcroed for five hours and made over 50 educational materials including schedules, math and reading activities, and behavioral supports for Yinka’s school. An Evening of Compassion

Local Bands Come Together in Support of Autism

On November 30th, 2006 AACTION, a local not-for-profit organization will host a benefit concert at SUBTERRANEAN featuring THE ITS!, THE EMERALD LIZARDS, and DETAGOH. This will also be the first event in partnership with Chicago BEAT for Charity (Bringing Eclectic Artists Together) local independent bands in support of charitable causes. Admission for the event is $10.00 (cash bar) at the door advance tickets (call 847-825-3423), also for $10.00, qualify for a raffle prize of an IPod Shuffle. The benefit starts at 9:00PM doors open at 8:00PM. Other prizes, including a 50/50 raffle, will be drawn at the benefit. All proceeds from the event will go directly to AACTION and will help fund a team of volunteers on their first humanitarian mission to provide autism training in India.
Rockin’ for Autism

On August 23rd, 2006 we had our first AACTION fundraiser - “Rockin’ for Autism” at Edison Park Inn, Chicago, IL. We had three great bands including The Llamas, Mighty Pilots, and Detagoh. Throughout the night we showed videos about AACTION and also showcased the musical talents of two individuals from the autism community - Noah and Ivan as they sat in with the bands. The night was a huge success - AACTION raised over $8,000 which will go towards our goal of sending a training team of volunteers to India in the spring.
